SPRINGFIELD, OH – After a long week and a Saturday filled with walk-off goodness, the Champion City Kings were held to four hits as Lafayette flew away with a 7-0 decision.
Gabe Phipps (Yorktown, IN; Lake Land College) made the start, but the Aviators took his first pitch over the left-center wall to lead 1-0. Phipps went 5.2 innings on Sunday, allowing five runs, four earned, on ten hits, two walks, and two strikeouts. Johnathon Ray (Sylvania, OH; Tiffin Univ.), Nathan Jendraszkiewicz (Aurora, IL; Lake Land College), and Blake Werry (Beavercreek, OH; Beavercreek H.S.) all made relief appearances on the day. Ray kept the Aviators scoreless through his 1.1 innings, walking one, and striking out two. Jendraszkiewicz gave up a leadoff home run and another hit, but kept the damage to that with two strikeouts in the eighth. Blake Werry made his home debut and gave up an earned run on two hits, one walk, and two strikeouts.
Offensively, the Kings were led by a perfect day from Trey Carter (Wheelersburg, OH; Rio Grande), going 3-for-3 with one walk. The other hit was collected in the ninth inning by Ben Stuart (Mason, OH; Evansville.)
The Kings fell to 10-12 on the second half, entering their last off day and the final week of the 2022 Prospect League season. The Kings are back in action on Tuesday for a doubleheader against the West Virginia Miners. For tickets, PLTV info, and more, keep it here to championcitykings.com!
