SPRINGFIELD, OH – Cade Kontny (Lakeland, FL; Spring Arbor University) last threw against Lafayette on the road, suffering his first loss of the season. Last night, the right-hander got revenge and the victory as Champion City knocked off the Aviators 3-2.
Kontny, coming off that start at Lafayette allowing six unearned runs and suffering the loss, was in complete control against the Aviators. Trevor Johnson was responsible for the only two runs off the right-hander, sending a deep fly ball over the centerfield fence in the 4th Inning. Through seven innings on a pleasant night in Springfield, Kontny threw for seven innings, allowing just the two runs, four hits, no walks, and eight strikeouts. The Kings bullpen was able to secure the victory, as Gabe Carter (Huntington, WV; Rio Grande) went an inning while giving up just two hits. Gabe Phipps (Yorktown, IN; Lake Land College) threw in the ninth for a 1-2-3 appearance and his first save of the season.
Offensively for Champion City, it was Nick Dolan (Pittsburgh, PA; Ohio Univ.) hitting a first-inning Sac Fly to put the home team up 1-0. Trailing 2-1 in their fourth, it was Patrick Fultz (Springfield, OH; Shawnee HS) homering for his first time as a King to tie the game up. In the seventh inning with the Aviators going to the pen, it was Edrick Padilla (Salinas, Puerto Rico; Ohio Wesleyan) singling to the keep the inning going, scoring Patrick Fultz with the catcher losing the ball on the tag. With the score sitting at 3-2, it was Gabe Carter and Gabe Phipps to seal the deal on the mound.
The Kings are 7-17, heading out on their longest road trip this season. It’ll be a six-game, five-day swing before returning home on July 6th against the Danville Dans. For tickets, PLTV information, and more, please check out championcitykings.com!
