The Kings are in the 2023 Playoffs!

SPRINGFIELD, OH – The Champion City Kings have concluded the 2023 regular season at 29-29 and are heading into the 2023 Prospect League playoffs for the second time in three years under manager Gavin Murphy! The Kings, clinching the second half spot in the Ohio River Valley Division, will visit Chillicothe tonight at 6:05 PM EST.

The Kings finished the regular season second in the league with home runs (58), sixth in team batting average (.279), first in sacrifice flies (33), and tied for the least amount of double plays hit into with 28.

Tyler Cox (Westbury, NY; West Virginia University) led the team with 11 home runs, two ahead of Lucas Day’s (Dayton, OH; Oakland University) 9 and four ahead of Ben Bach’s (Waconia, MN; Tiffin University) 7. Blake Buzzeo (Stow, OH; Miami University) played in all but four games this season, hit .306 on the season and stole a team-high 14 bases. David Novak (Zionsville, IN; Miami University) had the best batting average, hitting .426 in twenty-four games with 35 RBI. Lucas Day collected the most RBI on the squad with 43.

Pitching-wise, Zach Cabell (North Ridgeville, OH; Clark State College) won the most decisions with a 5-4 record and a 5.25 earned run average. Cole Agemy (Macomb, MI; Marshall University) had the most saves with five, three ahead of Luke Myers (Springfield, OH; Indiana Tech.) The Kings finished the year with the league’s eighth-lowest ERA at 6.14. Noah Curi (West Chester, OH; Clark State College) struck out the most batters with 46, five ahead of Gabe Phipps’ (Yorktown, IN; Tallahassee CC.)

With the 29-29 finish, the Kings had tied their best regular season record with the 2017 finish. Champion City is 1-1 in the playoffs since moving into Springfield and will face the Chillicothe Paints for a second time. The Kings won the 2021 Ohio River Valley Division Final 10-9 with a walkoff sacrifice fly.
