SPRINGFIELD, OH – What started off as a wonderful pitchers’ duel from Connor Lockwood (Libertyville, IL; Valparaiso) and West Virginia’s Kris Massey turned out to be a shutout loss for the Kings in the first game of a doubleheader.
Champion City had an interesting first inning, as Evan Lorey (Howell, MI; Spring Arbor Univ.) doubled to begin the inning, but tripped past the second base bag and was erased on the play. Patrick Fultz (Springfield, OH; Shawnee H.S.) was thought to have the inning’s second double, but never touched first base.
West Virginia took the lead for good against Lockwood and the Kings in their share of the 5th inning, pouring another three in the next inning off the starter. Lockwood went six innings, allowing four earned runs on six hits, one walk, while striking out eight. Tyler Wynkoop (Huber Heights, OH; Toledo) pitched the seventh inning, allowing the last two runs of the game on two hits, no walks, and one strikeout. Champion City was held to three hits in the game.
