LAFAYETTE, IN – No earned runs were recorded on Thursday Night, but the Champion City Kings couldn’t pull off the win in a 6-3 loss at Lafayette. Cade Kontny (Lakeland, FL; Spring Arbor University) got the start, allowing six unearned runs on 5.2 innings of work with one walk allowed, five hits, and three strikeouts. Kontny’s first and last innings of work is the only time the Aviators could score, as the right-hander pitched well and kept the team close.
Champion City chiselled out their first run in the fifth, as Alex Ryan (Lake Mills, WI; Valparaiso) singled home Jonah Sutton (Collierville, TN; Memphis), making it a 3-1 game. The Kings got their last pair of runs in their share of the eighth, trailing 6-1. Patrick Fultz (Springfield, OH; Shawnee High School) doubled in Ryan, followed by a Matt Mercer (Richton, MS; Pearl River CC) single and Fultz coming home on an outfield error.
Neither team scored any earned runs according to the box score, with both teams committing four errors on the night. Kontny took his first loss, falling to 1-1 on the season. The Kings now stand at 5-15, with the Chillicothe Paints coming in to town for Friday. That evening’s contest will feature dueling pianos from Spanky Entertainment out of Saint Louis, Missouri.
